Editor's Introduction

This week I bring you an interview with an ESRI product engineer on ArcGIS Survey Analyst and a sampling of GIS Day activities around the country. Personally, I attended two GIS Day events yesterday: one in Salem, Oregon, and one at the University of Oregon, in Eugene; more on the latter next week. I also bring to your attention a New York Times article, plus my usual round-up of news items from press releases.

GIS for Surveyors

Last week, I spent two days at ESRI's headquarters in Redlands, California, for a training in ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 and to tour the campus. I also took the opportunity to have a long conversation with Tim Hodson, Product Engineer for ESRI's Survey Analyst extension. We mostly focused on two topics: GIS for surveyors and the software development process. Here is what he told me on the first topic.

GIS Day 2006

This week is Geography Awareness Week (GAW), which has been held the third week of November since 1987, sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, the Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and ESRI.

GIS Day at the State Capitol in Salem, Oregon.

The Wednesday of GAW is GIS Day, when hundreds of events are held in more than 70 countries, showcasing and demonstrating GIS and promoting geographic literacy. (A few GIS Day events are held a few days before or after November 15, due to scheduling conflicts. In a few cases I've come across, the event's website, at the top, gives November 15 as the date of the event, but the text, lower on the page, gives a different date. The reason is that many of these sites use ESRI's GIS Day banner, which includes the date... even though the particular event may be on a different date!)

I asked the organizers of a couple of dozen GIS Day events three questions:

  1. What is the theme/focus, if any, of your GIS Day event this year?
  2. Will it include any special presentations or exhibits?
  3. Who is your target audience (e.g., the general public, students, public employees, etc.)?

Following is a sampling of the responses I received.

Briefly Noted

Yesterday's New York Times featured a story on the growing popularity of GPS-based navigation devices and the sharply dropping prices. Nothing new, but a good summary.
