Grants focus on the advancement of geographic sciences in the classroom

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., July 26, 2002 - Celebrating education excellence, Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions today announced it will award GeoMedia education grants valued at more than $6 million dollars. The grants will recognize innovative teaching that advances the use of geographic information sciences by educators and students in the classroom. The GeoMedia(R) Education Grants Program will award grants on two levels, including 1) community colleges, technical schools, and universities, and 2) K-12 and primary and secondary schools.

By taking advantage of these grants, students and teachers can use GeoMedia's leading-edge technology to explore new possibilities and impact the future of geographic information systems (GIS). They can learn GIS principles and methodology, spatial analysis techniques, GIS data construction, and a variety of other application capabilities. The products that will be part of the grant program are GeoMedia Professional, GeoMedia WebMap Professional, and IntelliWhere OnDemand and IntelliWhere LocationServer with Intergraph's powerful location-based services technology. Specific details about software awarded for each level can be found here.

In addition, each institution that receives a software grant will have their lesson plan and software implementation details submitted in the international GeoMedia Best Practices Awards contest. The worldwide contest recognizes projects and programs based on Intergraph's GeoMedia technology.

"Using GIS in the classroom creates an atmosphere of excitement for educators and students and generates many innovative ideas," said Fiona McKee, global academic program manager, Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions. "At Intergraph, we realize that the future of our industry and that of education are intertwined inexorably and that, by working together, we can build a solid foundation for advancing geographic sciences and the mapping and GIS industry."
